Based on information gathered from the 2014 IT Skills and Salary Survey, conducted by N.Y.-based business training and certification company Global Knowledge, this compiled list ranks certifications that are sure to increase your skill set, along with your salary.

No. 15 Citrix Certified Associate (CCA) For Citrix XenDesktop

The Citric Certified Associate (CCA) for Citrix XenDesktop will bring in an average salary of $95,094, according to the survey.

The CCA for Citrix XenDesktop certification authenticates the skills of IT operators and administrators in installing, managing, maintaining, monitoring and dealing with troubleshooting for XenDesktop 7 solutions. This includes XenDesktop deployment, Provisioning Services, Desktop Delivery Controller, XenServer and XenApp. Version 5 of CCA for Citrix XenDesktop is available in English only, whereas Version 4 is available in Chinese and Japanese.

No. 14 Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certification brings in an average salary of $95,276 and is ranked it at No. 14, according to the Global Knowledge survey.

However, this certification is old and can no longer be accessed. Instead, it has since been replaced by Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE.) The MCSE certifications can be achieved in server infrastructure, desktop infrastructure, private cloud, data platform, business intelligence, messaging, communication and SharePoint.

No. 13 Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)

The Cisco Certified Design Associate brings in an average salary of $95,602, according to the survey.

This associate-level certification is for network design engineers, technicians, and support engineers who are involved with establishing proficient network environments. By being CCDA certified, the individual will be able to exhibit services to design basic campus, data center, security, voice and wireless networks.

Prior to getting this certification, an authorized Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCNET), Cisco Certified Network Associate Routing and Switching, or any CCIE certification is required.

No. 12 ITIL Expert Certification

The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Expert certification brings in an average salary of $96,194, according to Global Knowledge.

This certification requires passing the ITIL Foundation exam and the capstone exam, Managing Across the Lifecycle. This certification is for those IT pros concerned with establishing and presenting a higher knowledge of the ITIL system.

Key requirements include having the ITIL Foundation certificate or a Bridge qualification equivalent, a total of 17 credits as the minimum from Foundation and Intermediate modules. This certification is a prerequisite for the ITIL Master Level, the highest level of qualification within the ITIL structure.

No. 11 Citrix Certified Administrator (CCA) For Citrix XenServer

The Citrix Certified Administrator for XenServer certification, the survey found, brings in an average salary of $97,578.

This CCA certification is currently being offered for version 6 and allows the certified professional to install, configure, administer, maintain and troubleshoot a XenServer deployment, including provisioning services.

No. 9 Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)

The Certified Ethical Hacker certification brings in an average salary of $103,822, according to Global Knowledge's survey.

Created and managed by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council,) this certification allows security professionals to be proficient in finding holes, weaknesses and vulnerabilities in an organization's network defense utilizing hackers' techniques. They will be able to scan, test, hack and protect their own systems. While a hacker is interested in inflicting damage and stealing information, a CEH is able to address and fix these insufficiencies, which is critical today.

No. 8 Citrix Certified Administrator (CCA) For Citrix NetScaler

The Citrix Certified Administrator for Citrix NetScaler brings in an average salary of $103,904.

Although the CCA for NetScaler certification is out of date for NetScaler 9, those with it are urged to upgrade to the new Citrix Certified Professional - Networking (CCP-N.) The CCP-N certifies network engineers with the comprehension and skills in implementing, managing and optimizing Citrix NetScaler 10 for networking performance and optimization.

No. 7 Citrix Certified Enterprise Engineer (CCEE)

The Citrix Certified Enterprise Engineer brings in an average salary of $104,240, the survey found.

This legacy certification demonstrates proficiency in various Citrix products. This includes XenApp6, XenDesktop 5 and XenServer 6 through the Citrix Certified Administrator (CCS) exam, the Citrix Certified Advanced Administrator (CCAA) for XenApp 6 and an engineering exam around implementing, securing, managing, monitoring, and troubleshooting a virtualization solution operating through Citrix products. Engineers with a CCEE certification help to build Citrix environments with data centers, private cloud and desktops. The certification also addresses security and staff mobility issues on devices.

No. 6 Certified Scrum Master

The Certified Scrum Master brings in an average salary of $107,396, according to Global Knowledge's survey findings.

This project management certification focuses on software application development. The process will entail a project manager to understand the Scrum framework, which involves team roles, activities and products.

To earn this certificate, a project manager will have to take a CSM course from a certified Scrum trainer and show progress through the online CSM test.

No. 5 Project Management Professional (PMP)

The Project Management Professional certificate, the survey said, brings in an average salary of $108,525.

This renowned project management certification has more than half a million active PMPs in 193 countries across the globe. To become certified, the test covers information on the lifecycle of a project including initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. To become certified, 35 hours of PMP-related training along with 7,500 hours of project management experience without a bachelor degree or 4,500 hours of project management experience with a bachelor degree or higher is required.

No. 4 Six Sigma Green Belt

The Six Sigma Green Belt brings in an average salary of $109,165, the survey said.

This certification focuses on manufacturing and producing better quality products. With the Six Sigma Green Belt, the certification holder will be able to analyze, solve problems and improve existing processes in a production manufacturing setting.

The Six Sigma Green Belt is best for mid- to upper-level project managers, process engineers, consultants and manufacturing engineers.

No. 3 Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)

According to the survey, the Certified Information Systems Auditor brings in an average salary of $112,040.

This certification dates back to 1978, and it is just for auditors. The CISA certifies those who are involved with auditing, monitoring, controlling, assessing IT and or business systems. Applicants will be tested for their capability in managing vulnerabilities, ensuring compliance standards within IT and business, and proposing controls, processes and updates to a company's policies.

No. 2 Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

The Certified Information Security Manager brings in an average salary of $114,844.

With more than 23,000 people with the certification since its debut in 2002, it is highly sought after, the report said. To enhance IT management expertise, this certificate is geared toward individuals who manage design and oversee an organization's information security.

The exam is exclusively offered only three times a year in 240 different locations and requires at least five years of experience in IS including three years as a security manager.

No. 1 Certified In Risk And Information Systems Control (CRISC)

The CRISC brings in an average salary of $118,253.

More than 17,000 people have earned the CRISC since its unveiling in 2010. This certification was created for IT professionals, project managers and for those who identify and manage risks through information systems controls. By focusing on risk and IS controls, the professional will be able to monitor and respond if and when threats occur.

To become certified, the IT professional must have at least three years of experience in three of the five areas the certification covers. The exam is only offered twice a year.

Abstract and Background

Abstract

Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are recommended for multimodal postoperative pain management. We evaluated opioid-sparing effects and rehabilitative results after perioperative celecoxib administration for total knee arthroplasty.
Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, observer-blind control study. Eighty patients that underwent total knee arthroplasty were randomized into two groups of 40 each. The study group received a single 400 mg dose of celecoxib, one hour before surgery, and 200 mg of celecoxib every 12 hours for five days, along with patient-controlled analgesic (PCA) morphine. The control group received only PCA morphine for postoperative pain management. Visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, active range of motion (ROM), total opioid use and postoperative nausea/vomiting were analyzed.
Results: Groups were comparable for age, pre-operative ROM, operation duration and intraoperative blood loss. Resting VAS pain scores improved significantly in the celecoxib group, compared with controls, at 48 hrs (2.13 ± 1.68 vs. 3.43 ± 1.50, p = 0.03) and 72 hrs (1.78 ± 1.66 vs. 3.17 ± 2.01, p = 0.02) after surgery. Active ROM also increased significantly in the patients that received celecoxib, especially in the first 72 hrs [40.8° ± 17.3° vs. 25.8° ± 11.5°, p = 0.01 (day 1); 60.7° ± 18.1° vs. 45.0° ± 17.3°, p = 0.004 (day 2); 77.7° ± 15.1° vs. 64.3° ± 16.9°, p = 0.004 (day 3)]. Opioid requirements decreased about 40% (p = 0.03) in the celecoxib group. Although patients suffering from post-operative nausea/vomiting decreased from 43% in control group to 28% in celecoxib group, this was not significant (p = 0.57). There were no differences in blood loss (intra- and postoperative) between the groups. Celecoxib resulted in no significant increase in the need for blood transfusions.
Conclusion: Perioperative celecoxib significantly improved postoperative resting pain scores at 48 and 72 hrs, opioid consumption, and active ROM in the first three days after total knee arthroplasty, without increasing the risks of bleeding.

Background

Surgical trauma induces the synthesis of prostaglandins, which sensitize the peripheral nociceptors.^[1] Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibit prostaglandin synthesis in the periphery and the spinal cord, therefore decreasing the post-operative hyperalgesic state.^[2] NSAIDs have been shown to have opioid-sparing effects^[3,4,5,6] and reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) by 30%.^[7] However, the analgesic effects of perioperative NSAIDs are still uncertain.^[8,9,10] Some studies suggest that perioperative NSAIDs improve postoperative pain for ambulatory arthroscopic knee^[11] or spinal fusion surgery.^[12] However, few papers have discussed the effectiveness of perioperative NSAID in pain management after total knee arthroplasty
(TKA).^[13,14,15] Rofecoxib has been the perioperative coxib in previous studies. However, in September 2004, it was withdrawn from the market due to its thromboembolic effects, particularly myocardial infarction.

Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor and an effective analgesic for acute postoperative pain.^[16] Although pre-operative non-selective NSAID use increases the risks of bleeding,^[10,17] celecoxib (1200 mg daily) has no effects on serum thromboxane or platelet functions.^[16] Celecoxib (400 mg) also has similar analgesic effects in comparison with conventional non-selective NSAID.^[4] To achieve less postoperative pain and better rehabilitation after TKA surgery, especially in the first week, prescription of oral celecoxib preemptively for pain management of TKA patients is reasonable. Although previous studies have evaluated the analgesic efficacy of rofecoxib, few studies to date have evaluated the efficacy of celecoxib for TKA. In this study, we hypothesized that celecoxib provides better efficacy than the use of patient-controlled analgesic (PCA) morphine, which is currently the standard therapy in our institute. We aimed to compare the difference in the pain scores at rest and ambulation, along with range of motion (ROM), morphine-sparing effects, PONV, and perioperative blood loss between patients receiving celecoxib treatment and patients receiving PCA morphine treatment after TKA surgeries.

Methods

This study was performed (from September 2006 to March 2007) after institutional IRB approval. All TKA surgeries were performed by one surgeon (Ching-Chuan Jiang). Under a randomized, prospective, observer-blind study design, subjects were sorted by random numbers into two groups. Inclusion criteria for this study were primary osteoarthritis and an age over sixty. Exclusion criteria for this study were rheumatoid arthritis, end-stage renal disease (complete kidney dysfunction requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation), previous cerebral vascular accident history, peptic ulcers, recent myocardial infarction (within 1 year), and allergy to sulf, NSAIDs, or morphine. The National Taiwan University Hospital and National Institutes of Health have approved the study and all participants will provide written informed consent.

The study group (n = 40) received 400 mg oral celecoxib at about 1 hr prior to surgery, and 200 mg every 12 hrs, along with PCA morphine, over the first five post-operative days. The control group (n = 40) received PCA morphine over the same postoperative period.

All patients had spinal anesthesia and hemovac drain tubes inserted for postoperative blood loss evaluation. Patient data included gender, age, range of motion (ROM), pain scores, blood loss and procedure duration. Pain scores were measured using a visual analog scale (VAS), with 0 indicating no pain and 10 indicating the worst imaginable pain.^[18] Pain scores were checked by the same observer at rest at 6, 12, 24, 48 & 72 hrs and 7 days after TKA surgery. We encouraged patients to ambulate 24 hrs after TKA. Pain scores at ambulation were also analyzed. We measured the range of motion before ambulation by using a goniometer. Patients were supine on the bed and we identified bony landmarks, including the greater trochanter, lateral femoral condyle, and the lateral mallelous, to facilitate goniometer placement. All ranges of motion were measured preoperatively and postoperatively by the same study nurse (Lih-Ching Horng). The CPM machine was used twice a day in all patients. PCA morphine dose and PONV occurrence were also recorded. All NSAIDs were discontinued at seven days after surgery. All patients received a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump after surgery. Morphine (1 mg/mL) was given intravenously with increases of 2 mL and a lockout interval of 10 minutes. Additionaly, thromboembolic prophlaxis (oral aspirin 100 mg) was given for seven postoperative days in both groups.

The primary endpoint was VAS pain reduction through perioperative celecoxib administration. Group sample sizes of 40 and 40 can achieve 85% power in the detection of a difference of one point on a 10-point VAS scale, which is equivalent to the minimal clinical significant difference on the VAS scale,^[19] in a design with four repeated measurements when the standard deviation is 1.8 points. Group sample sizes of 40 and 40 can achieve 91% power in the detection of a difference of one point for a 10-point VAS scale in a design with six repeated measurements, when the standard deviation is 1.8 points. Secondary endpoints include ROM, morphine-sparing effects, postoperative nausea, vomiting and blood loss.

Patient demographics were analyzed by ANOVA or Chi-squared test. Postoperative pain scores, postoperative ROM, morphine doses, blood loss, and PONV rates were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test. Group differences in pain intensity and ROM were also analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA test. Significance was defined as p < 0.05.
